Order of Operations

What does order of operations mean? Order of operations is the order in which you solve a math problem with many components. The first rule of order of operations is P.B.E.M.D.A.S. Don’t forget to solve the problem from left to right! (M&D) (A&S)

PleasePlease ExcuseExcuse MyMy DearDear SallySally AuntAunt

Parentheses The first step of the order of operations is parentheses. Ex. (3 x 6) = 18 Ex. (3 x 6) + 2 = 20  18 + 2 = 20

Exponents The second step of the order of operations is exponents. Ex. (3 + 2) 2 = 25  5 2 = 25 Ex. 3 + (3 + 2) 2 = 28  3 + 25 = 28

Multiplication The third step of the order of operations is multiplication. Ex. 6 x 4 = 24 Ex. (3-2) x 4 = 4  1 x 4 = 4

Division The fourth step of the order of operations is division. Ex. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 Ex. 8 ÷ 2 + (3 x 6) = 22  4 + 18 = 22

Addition The fifth step of the order of operations is addition. Ex. 3 + 6 = 9 Ex. 2 + 4 ÷ 2 = 4  2 + 2 = 4

Subtraction The last step of the order of operations is subtraction. Ex. 16 – 4 = 12 Ex. 18 – (2 + 2) 2 = 2    18 - 16 = 2

Practice (3 + 5)2 =28 – 3(2)= 4 + 8 ÷ 4 + 12 = (3 + 5) – 2 = Answers Copy the following problems into your notebook and practice them.

Practice 4 2 + (2 x 5) x 3 – 6 + 2 = Answers Copy the following problems into your notebook and practice them. (3 x 2) 2 ÷ 6 – 3 + 4 =

Quiz 12 x 2 – 4 x 6 = Copy the following problems on a piece of paper and hand them in when you are done. (12 + 2) – 12 ÷ 2 x 1 = Answer

Quiz (3 · 2)4 ÷ 2 + 3 – 4 = Copy the following problems on a piece of paper and hand them in when you are done. (12 + 2) – 12 ÷ 2 - 1 = Answer
