2  work – the transfer of energy to a body by the application of a force that causes the body to move in a direction parallel to the direction of the force  Work may be positive or negative.  Negative work decreases the objects energy.  work = force x distance  1 joule = 1N x 1m

3  power – the rate which work is done or the rate at which energy of a system changes  power = work/time  1 watt = 1J / 1s

4  energy – the ability to do work  1. potential energy – energy of position  gravitational potential energy – energy that could potentially do work that results from its position above the ground  PE = mgh  PE is measured in Joules.

5  2. kinetic energy – energy of an object due to motion  KE = ½(mv 2 )
