1 5 S’s of Toy Safety What to look for when evaluating toys

2 Consumer Protection Act A government agency that protects consumers rights when purchasing goods and services. Every consumer has rights and responsibilities and the Consumer Protection Act keeps them safe.

3 Size For children 3 and younger, no toys or parts less than 1 ¼ -1 3/8 as they are choking hazards. No jawbreakers or marbles Foods need to be cut up lengthwise hotdogs, cherries, and grapes

4 Safe Materials All toys must be Nontoxic No lead (excess lead can cause brain damage) No latex No cadmium (element found in batteries)

5 Sharp Edges Make sure that all toys are free from sharp edges or tips. If a toy becomes damaged it should be thrown away

6 Strings Less than 3 years of age no strings or cords over 12 inches. Strings longer than 12 inches the child has a threat of cutting off circulation. Hoods of coat with strings longer than 12 inches are illegal in the United States.

7 Supervision Baby sitter or parent supervision is a must. Gates at the top and the bottom of the stairs Corner table bumpers Electrical outlet covers Motorized toys Child proof locks or cabinets
