DEFINITION The position of any object lying in a plane can be represented with the help of two perpendicular line. In case of seating plan we require the no of column and that of the row, this simple idea has far reaching consequences, and has given rise to a very important branch of mathematics known as COORDINATE GEOMETRY.

COORDINATE AXES To locate the position of an object or a point in a plane, we require two perpendicular lines. One of them is horizontal, and the other is vertical. To locate the position of an object or a point in a plane, we require two perpendicular lines. One of them is horizontal, and the other is vertical. The plane is called the Cartesian, OR COORDINATE PLANE and the lines are called the coordinate axis. The plane is called the Cartesian, OR COORDINATE PLANE and the lines are called the coordinate axis. The horizontal line is called the X- axis, and the vertical line is called the Y-axis. The horizontal line is called the X- axis, and the vertical line is called the Y-axis.

PARTS OF COORDINATE GEOMETRY The coordinate axis divide the plane into four parts called quadrants. The coordinate axis divide the plane into four parts called quadrants. The point of intersection of the axis is called the origin. The point of intersection of the axis is called the origin. The distance of the point from the y-axis is called its x- coordinate, or abscissa. The distance of the point from the y-axis is called its x- coordinate, or abscissa. The distance of the point from the x-axis is called its y-coordinate, or ordinate. The distance of the point from the x-axis is called its y-coordinate, or ordinate. If the abscissa of a point is x and the ordinate is y then (x, y) are called the coordinate of the point. If the abscissa of a point is x and the ordinate is y then (x, y) are called the coordinate of the point.

Rules of coordinate geometry The coordinate of a point on the x- axis are of the form (x, o) and that of the point on the y-axis are (o, y). The coordinate of the origin are (o, o). If x is not equal to y then (x, y) is not equal to (y, x), and (x, y) is equal to (y, x),if x is equal to y.

PLOTTIG THE POINT  The coordinate of point are of the form(+, +) in the first quadrant.  In the second quadrant coordinates are of the form (-, +).  (-, -) are the coordinates in the third quadrant.  In the fourth quadrant (+, -) is the coordinate of the point here + denotes a positive real no and – denotes a negative real no.
