1 Atmosphere By Leah Hodge

2 Layers of the Atmosphere
Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Thermosphere

3 The Troposphere …averages about 7 miles in thickness.
…is where most clouds and weather are formed. …has temperatures that decrease as altitude increases.

4 The Stratosphere …ranges between 7 and 30 miles above the Earth’s surface. …has temperatures that can reach about 32ºF. …contains the ozone layer and the mesosphere.

5 The Ozone Layer …absorbs ultraviolet rays, heating up the air around it. …is located between 25 and 40 miles above the Earth’s surface. …is inside the stratosphere, just under the mesosphere.

6 The Mesosphere …extends from 30 to 55 miles above the Earth.
…has temperatures that decrease as altitude increases, can go as low as –130ºF. …has an average temperature of –58ºF. …is above the ozone layer, and within the stratosphere.

7 The Thermosphere …ranges from 55 to 435 miles above the Earth’s surface …has temperatures that range to 2696ºF …has 2 layers the ionosphere, and the exosphere. The Exosphere is where satellites orbit.

8 Atmospheric Gases The atmosphere contains: 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen
1% argon Minute quantities of Water vapor Carbon dioxide Other gases
