EQ: Explain the process of cell division, identifying its parts and clarifying their importance.

A pumpkin can get very large because it grows in size by increasing both the size and number of cells. A single cell grows and then divides… forms two cells… and those two cells divide…and so on. Cells divide in your body too!!!

Cell cycle is the regular sequence of growth and division that cells undergo Three main stages: interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis When a cell grows and prepares for division, it creates two “daughter cells”

Interphase is the period before cell division During interphase, the cells grow, make a copy of their DNA, and prepare to divide into two cells. Growing: Cell grows to its full size and produces structures it needs (ribosomes, mitochondria, etc.)

Copying DNA: The cell makes an exact copy of the DNA in its nucleus during replication At the end of replication, the cell will have two identical sets of DNA Preparing for Division The cell produces structures that it will use to divide into two cells

Mitosis is the stage during which the cell’s nucleus divides into two new nuclei One copy of the DNA is distributed into each of the two daughter cells. Four parts to mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase

Chromatin in the nucleus condense to form the double-rod structures called chromosomes. Each rod is called a chromatid and are held together by a centromere

The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell (Metaphase – Middle)

The centromeres split and the chromatids (rods) separate creating new chromosomes. New chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell causing the cell to stretch out.

The chromosomes begin to stretch out and lose rod-like appearance. Nuclear envelope forms around the chromosomes

The cytoplasm divides. The organelles are distributed into each of the two new cells.

Read Pages 55-62 in your book to review this material and get you ready for tomorrow’s quiz. Thanks! Also, don’t forget questions and the summary for your notes. Do not turn your notes in.

Please put the two set of cards in order from Interphase all the way to cytokinesis. Please label each stage with the notecards Thanks!
