1 Declaring Independence Targets: 1.I can describe the American Revolution and explain it's effects and consequences. 2.I can compare and contrast a Patriot to a Loyalist. 3.I can analyze and interpret the Declaration of Independence. 4.I can identify and describe important people, places, and events linked to the Revolutionary War.

3 “All men are created equal” is the statement from the Declaration of Independence that still inspires Americans and people from other nations.

4 “All men are created equal” “All men (not women) are created equal” “All (white) men (not women) are created equal” “All (landowning, white) men (not women) are created equal” “All (landowning, white) men (not women, aged 21 and over) are created equal” WHO IS CREATED EQUAL???

5 Importance of the Declaration It explained to the world WHY it was necessary to break from Great Britain. It made it clear that DEMOCRACY would be the form of government in America. It established several of our Core Democratic Values such as life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, equality, participation in government, etc.

6 Treason a violation of the allegiance owed by somebody to his or her own country, e.g. by aiding an enemy. –an act of betrayal or disloyalty Punishment in colonial times: death by hanging, usually done publically
