2 “Thank God for Michigan” - Abraham Lincoln, 1861 States had more control when it came to raising armies Michigan citizens volunteered for service and raised lots of money Leaders of the regiments (1,000 soldiers) were often chosen based on influence and not on military ability Smithsonian American History Museum – Washington D.C.

3 Contributions Soldiers Cities sent soldiers to fight in various groups –Regular regiments (regular soldiers) –Cavalry (soldiers on horses) –Sharpshooters (similar to snipers) –Artillery (cannons) –Engineers and Mechanics Citizens at Home Would hold fundraisers Raised more soldiers when called upon Produced wheat, wool, iron, and copper

4 Not All Cherry Blossoms and Petoskey Stones The longer the war lasted, the more it affected work and prices –Jobs had to be done by the elderly and female –Prices for products increasing due to limited supply Race riots started in 1863 after Lincoln had announced the Emancipation Proclamation Confederate attempt to free Johnson’s Island near Sandusky

6 Minorities and Women USCT – United States Colored Troops –Organized in 1863 –Some soldiers returned after escaping to Canada to fight Company K, First Michigan Volunteer Sharpshooters – Made up of Ojibwa and Potawatomi Indians Sanitary Commission – Organization similar to the Red Cross that provided supplies and sent nurses to war

7 George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) Born in Ohio but moved to Monroe Known for being a brave and fearless cavalry leader Led a charge against the Confederacy during the battle of Gettysburg –Shouted “Come on you Wolverines!” –Helped stop what was supposed to be a surprise attack

8 Final Statistics Michigan sent 90,000 soldiers to fight –85,000 were volunteers 4,100 soldiers were killed Gettysburg Military Park –Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
