2 Topics From the Last Call August 2nd A coaching demonstration. –How to coach in the OR –When to coach during a case –When to coach the team vs the individual Talking to nurses and scrub techs: a mock presentation.

3 How Did the Homework Go?

4 Last Weeks Homework Continue/Start to administer the culture survey. Continue to talk with your colleagues one-on-one. If you haven’t already, hold the meeting that you scheduled at the beginning of the call-series with as many surgical personnel that can attend. This can be a large inter-disciplinary meeting or departmental meetings. Prioritize surgical specialties for the roll-out using your knowledge of which surgeons will be most receptive to the checklist. Create a timeline for your hospital’s expansion and send it to the Safe Surgery 2015 team at safesurgery2015@hsph.harvard.edu. Continue implementing the checklist. Use the Surgical Safety Checklist and Teamwork Observation Tools together in at least 5 cases. If you are part of the research send us your completed observation tools.

6 OR Team Training Update

7 We held two workshops last week to create the team training course for South Carolina. ~ 30 people helped shape the course including: –Administrators –Circulating Nurses –CRNA’s –Scrub Techs –Surgeons We trained six people to run future workshops.

8 Team Training Topics The Checklist as a Means to Enhance Teamwork in the OR. Closed Loop Communication Speaking Up Coaching in the OR

9 What We Created 20 Minute Presentation Exercise

10 Next Steps Hold regional workshops throughout the state to train individuals on how to give this course to their surgical teams.
