2  Is the MEANING behind a work of literature.  It’s the central message.  What does the author want me to remember?

3  Themes about emotions and experiences that are common across time periods and cultures.  What are some examples?

4  “When it comes to war, there are no winners.”  “Difficult choices are part of growing up.”  “Love binds people together.”  “You get out of something what you put into it.”

5 THEME is not the SUBJECT of the text, it’s and insight or idea about the subject. Subject: Love Theme: Love conquers all. Subject: War Theme: When it comes to war, there are no winners.

6  Some works of literature have more than one theme.  Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham has two themes…  #1: Don’t be afraid to try something new.  #2: People aren’t always what they seem.

7  Setting: Dublin, Ireland  Civil Wars in 1922 (June)  A town divided by politics: Republicans and Free Staters. ▪ Republicans: “Ireland should be separate from England!” ▪ Free Staters: “We need England’s help!”

9  Create an alternate ending for “The Sniper.”  Keep graphic violence to a minimum– be creative, not bloody!  1 page (depending on handwriting style)  Due tomorrow: Wednesday, September 12 th
