7. History of the Profession  “Handmaiden” or assistant to the provider has always been a vital role  First recognition of this was nursing  Over time, the medical assistant has emerged and also plays a vital role in health care.

History of the Profession  The last 100 years have seen medical technology expand by leaps and bounds  More demands are placed on the staff of medical practices  Nursing is primarily found in the acute-care setting  The MA’s role has expanded more and more as testing and treatment have found their place increasingly in the office setting instead of the acute-care setting

9. History of the Profession  Defined in 1991 by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)  “Medical Assisting is an allied health profession whose practitioners function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures.”

10. Scope of Practice  Varies state to state  Important to note that medical assisting is NOT a licensed profession  MA’s are allowed to perform clinical procedures ONLY under the supervision of a licensed provider who has been granted the right to delegate (MD, DO, NP, PA)
