2 Lesson 1 You can develop skills that will help you manage throughout your life. Health skills help you manage your health and are also called life skills. Health skills – specific tools and strategies to maintain, protect, and improve all aspects of your health.

3 Lesson 1 Continued Good communication is a vital health skill. Interpersonal communication – exchange of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs between two or more people. - use I messages - show respect and caring - be an active listener

4 Lesson 1 Continued Refusal skills – communication strategies that can help you say no when you are urged to take part in some unhealthy activity. Refusal skills are: – Say no in a firm voice – Explain why – Offer alternatives – Stand your ground – Leave if necessary

5 Lesson 1 Continued Conflict resolution – the process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving. Only use reliable sources of health information. – Health care providers –.gov or.edu – Parents, trusted adults

6 Lesson 1 Continued Understanding what influences you helps you make better choices. Influences on your health: – Personal values – Family and culture – Personal beliefs – Media and technology – Perceptions – Friends and peers – Curiosity and fears – School and community

7 Lesson 1 Continued Self-Management skills – take charge of your own health. Two self-management skills: – Practice healthful behaviors – Manage stress Stress – reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges. Health advocacy – taking action to influence others to address a health-related concern or support a health-related belief.

8 Lesson 2 Achieving good health begins with making responsible decisions. The older you become the more responsibility will come your way. Decision-making skills – help you make good choices. Your decisions should reflect your values. – Values – your beliefs and attitudes about what is important.

9 Lesson 2 Continued Decision-making skills – steps that enable you to make a healthful decision. Decision-making steps: – State the situation. – List the options. – Weigh the possible outcomes. – Consider values. – Make a decision and act on it. – Evaluate the decision.

10 Lesson 2 Continued The Help Strategy: – H – Healthful – E – Ethical – L – Legal – P – Parent approval Working toward goals helps you achieve your hopes and dreams. Goals – the things that you aim for that take planning and work.

11 Lesson 2 Continued Types of goals: – Short-term – a goal you can reach in a short time period. – Long-term – a goal you can reach over an extended period. To reach your goal, you need an action plan. – Action plan – multi-step strategy to identify and achieve goals.

12 Lesson 2 Continued Developing an action plan: – Set a goal and write it down. – List the steps to achieve your goal. – Identify sources of help. – Set a reasonable time frame. – Evaluate your progress with checkpoints. – Reward yourself for reaching your checkpoints.

13 Lesson 3 The health consumer has the responsibility to make informed buying decisions. You need to be aware of advertising. – Advertising – written or spoken media message designed to interest consumers in purchasing a product.

14 Lesson 3 Continued Hidden messages in advertising: – Bandwagon – Rich and famous – Free gifts – Great outdoors – Good times – Testimonials

15 Lesson 3 Continued Evaluating products: – Read product labels. – Do some comparison shopping. Information provided on labels: – Name – Intended use – Directions – Warnings – Manufacturer’s information – Amount – Active and inactive ingredients

16 Lesson 3 Continued Comparison shopping – judging the benefits of different products. Criteria for comparison shopping: – Cost and quality – Features – Warranty – Safety – People’s Opinions – Consumer organization product ratings

17 Lesson 4 Take action to correct consumer problems. When shopping for a product: – Return policy – Warranty – Packaging and receipt – Read and follow directions – Use as directed

18 Lesson 4 Continued If you are not satisfied with the response to your efforts to make a product right: – Contact The Better Business Bureau – Contact local, state and federal gov’t agencies There are consumer advocates whose sole purpose is to take on regional, national and international consumer issues. Malpractice – failure by a health professional to meet accepted standards.

19 Lesson 4 Continued You can get help with a health care professional problem from the American Medical Association or a state licensing board. Health fraud – sale of worthless products or services that claim to prevent or cure health problems. Look out for: – Miracle Cure – Overnight results – All natural
