1 Table of Contents Equations: Solving Graphically Example 1: Solve graphically. First get all nonzero terms on one side. Second, enter the expression on the right under y 1 by pressing. Y = Third graph. Try using the decimal zoom window first by pressing. ZOOM 4 A solution will appear as an x-intercept on the graph. Zoom out as needed until one appears. (To zoom out press.) However, it is not needed here. 3ZOOMENTER

2 Table of Contents Equations: Solving Graphically Slide 2 Next, use the built-in TI-83 x-intercept finding program by pressing. "Left Bound?" will appear. 2ndTRACE 2 Use the left/right arrow keys to move the tracer star near but to the left of where the graph crosses the x- axis. Then press. "Right Bound?" appears. ENTER Note Now use the left/right arrow keys to move the tracer star near but to the left of where the graph crosses the x-axis. Then press. "Guess?" appears. ENTER

3 Table of Contents Equations: Solving Graphically Slide 3 Note the marker arrows near the top of the screen. The graph should cross the x-axis between these bars. The x-intercept value shown is an approximate solution of the equation, It is accurate to the number of decimal places shown. Now use the left/right arrow keys to move the tracer star near where the graph crosses the x-axis. Then press. ENTER

4 Table of Contents Note, if an equation has more than one real solution, there will be more than one x-intercept. This procedure will need to be followed for each x-intercept. Equations: Solving Graphically Slide 4 This procedure only finds real solutions of equations. Try: Solve x 3 = x – 4 graphically. The approximate solution is x = - 1.796322.
