2 What we’ll be doing today… We will be building criteria (reasons) for how and why aspects of culture are able to be part of Pop Culture. You will also be practicing reading and extracting an argument and creating an opinion based on that reading

3 Highlights from Yesterday… The definition pop culture: Popular Culture is the arts, artifacts, entertainment, fads, beliefs and values that are shared by large segments of society. Can you come up with an example for each of the items underlined? Talk to the person next to you first, we’ll bring this out

8 Reading Practice To get all of you ready for the high levels of reading, you need to actually READ! In pairs or threes, read the article Pop Goes the Culture by Bob Beasley You are going to try something new to get your brain ready to process information all year long

9 Some Details for Reading… Simple Instructions Partner A- You will read the article out loud Partner B- You will annotate what partner A is thinking as they read Partner A is the person who lives the closest to Animo Your task by end of time given is to get the key points of the reading…What is the author saying? 2 nd task, is track your process for reading, what are the struggles, etc For example: Lack of attention span, vocabulary, etc

10 What caveats/conditions need to exist? Some ideas to consider: Easily accessible Mass appeal (everyone can like it) Artistic and intellectual integrity Can take people away from ordinary lives But… can also be relatable to everyday life Shared experience Development of technology Historical context

11 How is culture spread? Tradition of oral stories passed down from generation to generation Before the advent of TV, newspapers, books, magazines, etc Television Music (phonograph, record, cassettes, CDs, now MP3s) Movies Art Now, the internet undoubtedly allows almost anyone

12 The Magic Word for Pop Cult Some questions to consider?: What happens when something does not meet the criteria mentioned above? What if access to all these medium are not available? What is that magic word that gives us Pop Culture… ACCESS!!!
