2  Reading Standard 2.1 Compare and contrast the features and elements of consumer materials to gain meaning from documents (e.g., warranties, contracts, product information, instruction manuals). RReading Standard 2.6 Use information from a variety of consumer, workplace, and public documents to explain a situation or decision and to solve a problem. Reading Standard 2.5 Understand and explain the use of a complex mechanical device by following technical directions. California Reading Standards

3 Workplace Documents  Serve 2 basic functions:  Communication: E-mail, memorandums (memos), and reports  tell about upcomming meanings, changes in policy, and other info. needed to do your job.  Instruction: Employee manuals and user guides.  what is expected from you at work or teach how to operate something.

4 Public Documents  consist of info. concerning public agencies and non-profit groups.  Inform people of situations, decisions, responsibilities, schedules, occasions, and events that might interest them.  voting issues, health concerns, community decisions

5 Consumer Documents  Consumer- someone who buys something or uses what someone else buys.  Consumer documents: give you the information you need to select, purchase, and use your product.  product information: tells what the product will do  contract: spells out exactly what services will and will not be provided.  warranty: that spells out exactly what happens if the computer doesn’t work properly and what you are required to do to receive service  instruction manual: tells how to set up and use the computer.  technical directions: that give precise technical information about installation and use of product.

6 Read the Fine Print!!!  Product Information: on the box or label is the first place to check to see that the item is really what you want.  Does it have all of the features you are looking for?  Contracts: define what you are getting, what the cost is, and how long the agreement lasts.

7  Warranties: guarantee that the product will work for a specified period of time.  Instruction Manuals: Informs the consumer on how to install and operate the item properly.  Technical directions: often included when an item is complicated or mechanical in nature.  Lay out steps to assemble or operate. Read the Fine Print!!!
