3 Listening has Psychological and Cognitive dimensions Hearing is a part of listening Selecting and organizing information Interpreting communication

4 Responding (eye contact, nodding, attentive posture, and questions and comments) Remembering (we remember less than half a message immediately after we hear it and 35%of the message after 8 hours) We have to exert effort to listen well

5 Being mindful is being present fully in the moment Don’t let your thoughts wander from the present situation Do not impose your own ideas or judgments When people sense we are listening they express their ideas in more depth Being mindful is your choice

6 As we listen to others we decide how to categories them (good friend, person in trouble, parent) We evaluate whether they are upset, calm, open or close to advice etc. We decide how to act accordingly Focus on the words not the person

7 Do not impose your own ideas on others Do not try to correct or argue with them about what they feel Exhibit an encouraging expression Refrain from yawning If you feel drained out after a talk then you have listened to the person
