“ It’s an ‘Interpret a Title’ Tuesday!” October 30, 2012 Mr. Houghteling

1. The Awakening –Title 2. Anticipation Guide 3. What does it mean to annotate a text? 4. Analytical Paraphrase— How does this lead to characterization?

 In a quickwrite, think about and discuss what you think the novel’s title might mean.  Consider the following: ◦ What connotations are embedded in the idea of an “awakening?” ◦ Who or what is being awakened? ◦ Do you remember a specific time when something inside you was “awakened?” ◦ How did this “awakening” change your life?

AGREESTATEMENT or BELIEFDISAGREE 1A. 1A. As a female, I would rather stay home and raise my children than pursue a professional career. 1A. 1B. 1B. As a male, I would rather my wife stay home and raise our children rather than pursue a professional career. 1B. 2. 2. It is more likely for men to cheat on women than women to cheat on men. 2. 3. 3. It is perfectly acceptable to have close friends of the opposite sex. “I’d be fine if my boyfriend/girlfriend were close to someone of the opposite sex.” 3. 4. 4. By the way I dress, talk, and act, I’m sure most people have a pretty good idea of who I am. 4. 5. 5. Self-expression is always more important than following the norms of society. 5.

In thinking about how you are going to approach The Awakening, we must discuss what it means to actively read. How do you annotate - or mark the text - when you read? Remember Nabokov: what do “good readers” do?

“ ‘You are burnt beyond recognition,’ he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage” (2). - Kate Chopin, The Awakening

“He thought it was very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little interest in things which concerned him, and valued so little his conversation” (5). -Kate Chopin, The Awakening

“He reproached his wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it was not a mother’s place to look after children, whose on earth was it?”(5). -Kate Chopin, The Awakening

 From the three quotes from The Awakening, what can we learn about the husband and wife, ala, what is their characterization?  Write down a response that can be supported by the text— the quotes we’ve discussed.

“ ‘You are burnt beyond recognition,’ he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage.” “ He thought it was very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little interest in things which concerned him, and valued so little his conversation.” “ He reproached his wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it was not a mother’s place to look after children, whose on earth was it?”

 Read and re-read through page 13, section VI.  Please bring your $3 for your copy of The Awakening - and get excited.
