How Many Bears Live in the Woods? Day 2

Question 1 Add up what you as a black bear collected 1.Add the total number of chips for each type (i.e. 5 green chips of P-10, 1 green chip of P-20 = 70 lbs of plants) 2.Add all of your totals up for a total amount gathered (i.e. 70 lbs of plants, 20 lbs of meat, 10 pounds of berries = 100 lbs of food) The typical black bear requires 80 pounds of food every 10 days. Did you survive?

Question 2 How much did the blind, injured, & mother bears gather? Blind Bear:Injured Bear: Mother Bear: Did these bears survive?

Question 3 The “mother” bear needed twice as much food for her & her cubs to survive (160 lbs), did the mother have enough food for her & her cubs? If not who would eat first? Would the cubs eat & if so what would happen to the mother? Would the mother eat & if so what would happen to the cubs?

Divide the amount of food you collected in each of the five categories & convert each category to a percentage of the total poundage you gathered. What category had the highest percent? What category had the lowest percent? Are all of the categories limiting factors? Question 4

Question 4 continued Provide your data to your instructor so it can be entered into the Excel spreadsheet Add up the total food pounds for the entire class Divide that total by 80 pounds What is the carrying capacity of our forest? (i.e. How many bears can survive in our forest?)

Question 5 Given the number of classmates in class today as bears in our example, how much food would have to be available in the forest for all of them to survive injury free? If this much food were available, would the bear population increase the following year? Explain your answer.

Question 6 If unlimited food was available, could the bear population increase indefinitely? (Forever) Why or why not?

Question 7 If we wanted a more accurate simulation, what are some possible changes we could make?

Ticket Out the Door 1. Explain why a forest that can support 16 bears might not have 16 bears in it. 2. Which Graph matches the following data: 160, 100, 80
