2 Objective Demonstrate your ability to identify, analyze and explain the tone and mood in a literary work. Homework: If not finished in class, complete the Tone and Mood Quiz.

3 Syllabus Signature Sheets Last chance to turn in your signature sheets and receive free points. Worth 20 points Here’s the rub... Even if you do not turn it in, you still are required to bring it signed.

4 Review Friday’s Homework Label your paper correctly. Do you remember? Check your notes from Friday. A word on cheating... Pair/share your responses (A&B). Class Responses. (Pens down!) Make sure your papers are properly labeled. Turn in for grading.

5 Tone and Mood…What’s the difference? Marry Poppins – Notice how tone is very different in these two clips. Marry Poppins For each clip, evaluate and provide three specific pieces of evidence explaining the tone. Original vs. alternate Mood is how the viewer feels after watching each example. Toy Story

6 Mood - How you feel after reading the author’s words – the general atmosphere Tone and Mood can be confusing and are not the same. Remember: Tone belongs to the writer, and mood belongs to the writing. Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject expressed in words or implied. Mood is how the reader feels (emotion) after reading the writer’s words.

In an unbiased manner, include evidence from the clip, and write a paragraph explaining your thoughts on the scene’s mood. Time: 15 minutes – work silently. You may review the clip on your device if you wish. Pair/share your responses.

9 Do you now understand tone and mood? Read the vignette My Grandma Told Stories. What’s a vignette? Quiz: - Review the story. Mark up as needed. - Answer the two questions on the handout. - You may use your notes but no e devices or help. Work quietly and individually.
