MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 THEMIS MISSION PRE-ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW Environmental Test Overview and Logistics Rick Sterling University of California - Berkeley

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Summary of Pathfinder Test New Elements in Upcoming Tests Test Flow Transportation Schedule Activity and Staff Schedule Command and Telemetry Electrical Ground Support Equipment PRESENTATION TOPICS

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 DATEACTIVITYCOMMENT Mar 20-21Arrive at JPL, offload and set up. Mar 22Magnetics Test with readings of probe taken in and out of helmholtz coil, with power on and power off. Data shows Themis is well within its specification requirements of 5nT at 2.5 meters from center. Mar 27-30Vibration Tests – 3 axes,Sine, Random.Test terminated at 3dB below planned level due to concern about overtest. Otherwise all normal. Report written by James Strain of Swales compares results with model predicts along with data plots. Mar 31Shock/Separation TestCompleted without anomaly. Apr 4-6EMC/EMI TestsPASS on all tests. Apr 13-16Thermal BalanceResults correlate with predicts, generally within a few degrees. April 17-21Thermal VacuumFour cycles. Instruments and spacecraft components perform within specs. Apr 24Move to Mag Facility, final Mag TestTesting confirmed that Themis components had not permed up as a result of vibration or other tests. Apr 25Depart JPL. Transportation back to SSL. Pathfinder Environmental Test F2 Environmental Test: Magnetics, Vibration, Thermal Balance, Thermal Vac, EMC/EMI. Passed all tests. No significant issues.

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 NEW ELEMENTS OF UPCOMING TESTS Vibration with Probe Carrier Assembly Acoustics with Probe Carrier Assembly Thermal Vacuum with Two Spacecraft in Chamber Spin Balance with GSFC Miller Table

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Test Flow All Probes F1 – F5

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Test Flow (cont.) Parallel Paths: F1/F5 – F3/F4 – F2 Stagger sequence of Align, Spin Bal and DC magnetics as needed.

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Transportation Schedule Probe Carrier is already at JPL Shipment with 3 satellites to arrive at JPL on June 29 Shipment with 2 satellites to arrive at JPL on July 5 Transportation Plans Air Ride, lift gate Monitoring: Temp and RH, Vibration Pilot car Offloading and Movement at JPL by forklift Transportation

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Materials Organization Hardware Organization and Coordination EGSE Racks clearly labelled – 4 pairs of Umb/BB; 2 RF. Each satellite (F1 – F5) has associated rolling wire rack containing the red/green tag items, blankets, RF hat, etc. One wire shelf rack for each satellite. Minimize or eliminate risk of incorrect placement. Tools, harnesses, etc which are shared between satellites are on other wire shelf racks. One rack for clean room supplies; one rack for items used in clean room; one rack for other tools, etc..

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Activity and Staff Schedule Probe Activities Designated Staff Scheduling Activities of PCA and each Probe are scheduled by date with required staff identified. Daily communication between UCB and JPL.

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 Data Paths: 1. Probe ITOS 2. Engr and Sci Data at JPL 3. ITOS relays telem to UCB 4. Engr Data at UCB 5. Sci Data at UCB Command / Telemetry Data at JPL is seen and archived at UCB.

MPEREnvironmental Test OverviewUCB, June 23, 2006 EGSE EGSE Racks have been used to test out individual probes. We have four pairs of Umb and Baseband plus two RF racks. Complete EGSE Set = Umb+BB+RF Will use two sets of racks plus two teams for Thermal Vacuum. For Probe Carrier Assembly we have new EGSE which allows display of engineering data from all five satellites with cmd/telem with one satellite (rotating).
