I Block 2012 Citizens,Community,Cosmopolitans Community Connections: Where do we come from? Building cultural competence

Why are we here? Connection to our Goal Lifelong learners, thoughtful citizens and caring people: Actively expand their vision of the world Engage with difference Attend to others I Block works to develop a community of citizens and cosmopolitans.

Objectives I can explain how maps shape the way we think about the world. I can identify, explain and share places meaningful in my life & I know about places meaningful to my peers. I can define cultural competence & explain how today’s lesson expanded my own cultural competence.

1 minute challenge Get out paper and writing utensil. When I flip to next slide, list all of the differences that you notice. You will have 1 minute.

What is different?

A short clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8zBC2dv ERM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8zBC2dv ERM How are the maps different? Why are the maps different? Do you think the difference matters? Why?

Make meaning through conversation: Partner Discussion Turn to a partner and discuss: 1.Which map(s) are you familiar with? 2.Should schools use multiple maps? Why or why not?

What is cultural competence? Understanding your own view of world Knowledge of cultural practices & worldviews (your own and others) Attitude of respect and curiousity towards cultural difference Cross-cultural skills (ie: communication)

What is cultural competence? Turn to you partner and define cultural competence in your own words.

To reflect on our own world view and to learn about others… Place a pin on our classroom map to show where you are “from”. Use as many pushpins as you need. Sketch a map of your life to represent places, people, activities that matter to you and have shaped your world view. Represent however you want. Ideas: draw your house or your neighborhood; sketch your path from birth to now including places you’ve lived and/or stuff you have done.

Reflection How can maps impact the way you understand the world? What is cultural competence? What did you learn about a classmate? Look at the map of our experience on the wall. What do you notice?

How valuable did you find the information in today’s class? 1.Very Valuable 2.Somewhat Valuable 3.Not Very Valuable 4.Not at All Valuable Any questions, ideas or suggestions? Feedback helps us improve!
