Staffing and Leadership Update IOOS Office Changes: 75% of our 4 leadership positions changed in past 11 months New Deputy Director as of June 1, 2014 (Gouldman) Hired George Jungbluth as RB&P Division Chief starting Nov., 2014 Hired Derrick Snowden as Operations and Communications Division Chief starting January 11, 2015 Hired Kathleen Bailey as new Oceanographer in OPS-C division Nancy Seeger is new Communications point of contact Torie Ketcham is our part-time web developer 2 Vacancies - Next 6 months, 2 Physical Scientist/Oceanographers in the Operations and Communications Division 4

Forward Look FY2015 -16 IOOS Program Office Over-Arching Priorities –DMAC and Modeling Progress –Marine Sensor Innovation –Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (BON) –Ocean Enterprise Study –IOOS Advisory Committee –Certification –FY16 Federal Funding Opportunity –Interagency Ocean Observation Committee –Communicating IOOS successes to Agency Leaders and on the Hill 5

US IOOS Program Office: DMAC Focus 6 Technical solutions Image courtesy steve-dale.net Building community Implementation across the enterprise Image courtesy proactive IT Technical solutions People Process Technology DMAC is the collection of people, process, and technology that enable the dissemination of diverse and distributed data sets using the WWW as the platform. IOOS is deploying, and in some cases building, infrastructure to enable this dissemination.

DMAC What’s New 7

IOOS: Advancing Communities HF Radar: Gliders: Animal Telemetry: 8 Wave Measurements: Biological Variables & BIO TT

Marine Sensor Innovation 9 Sensor Evaluation Coastal Modeling Test bed Ocean Technology Transition

 A third-party testbed for evaluating technologies  P H Sensors (2013/2014) – 7  DO Sensors II (2014/2015) – 10  A forum for capacity and consensus building  An information clearinghouse for environmental technologies ACT Services Alliance for Coastal Technologies 10 (FY2015/2016)

US IOOS Coastal & Ocean Modeling Testbed Venue to facilitate testing and transitions into operations. Improving ties to different NOAA and partner Agency modeling efforts. 5 projects; Hypoxia in Chesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico, Inundation in PR/USVI, West Coast Operational Forecast System, CI tools for comparing models/data 11

Ocean Technology Transition – FY14 12 Fostering the transition of marine sensor and other advanced observing technologies to operations mode. IOOS awarded five grants totaling $2.1 million Operational Nutrient Observatory for the Northeastern United States – Industry Partner: WetLabs Imaging Flow CytoBot in SF Bay – Industry Partner: McLain & Axiom The “Burk-o-lator” – developing low cost OA sensors

Marine Biodiversity U.S. launched 3 Marine Biodiversity Observation Network projects to show marine and coastal data could be integrated into the system U.S. contribution to GEO BON is focused in in four regional geographies: the Florida Keys, Monterey Bay, Channel Islands, and the U.S. Chukchi Sea continental shelf. http://www.ioos.noaa.gov/biodivers ity/welcome.htmlhttp://www.ioos.noaa.gov/biodivers ity/welcome.html Credit: MBARI 13 GEO BON - Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network

Competitive Awards & Certification Federal Funding Opportunity 5-Year Funding Opportunity Published February 2015 Proposals due August 31, 2015 Merit review in planning for Fall 2015 Decisions by early Spring 2016 Certification Open for Certification - July 2014 14

Ocean Enterprise Study of U.S. Businesses >600 private sector firms Most companies < 10 employees 83% providers; 9% intermediaries Input Needed: http://www.usworks.com/usioos/ 15

MARACOOS Forward? Challenge to MARACOOS: Continue to build and grow new partnerships that bring value to users through technology, discovery, data, and knowledge Bring new partners and data into IOOS Identify issues to rally around - like 59degree water on the bottom at Georges Bank Help validate models with in situ data and modeling expertise from Global SST and SSH to HYCOM and WavewatchIII Its all about the Water! Mimic the Shad, Rockfish and follow the American Eel? 16

Congratulations and Thank You Thank you for these successes in 2014-15 MARACOOS-led modeling effort resulted in revised butterfish stock assessment and the opening of a valuable fishery in the Northwest Atlantic New York Harbor added as the third location that uses IOOS high frequency data for the PORTS system New MARACOOS partnership with the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program 17
