3 GIS in Prevention, County Profiles, Series 4 (2007) 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Howard County is located in North Central Indiana. It is bordered by the following counties: Grant to the east, Miami and Cass to the north, Carroll to the west, Clinton to the southwest, and Tipton to the south. U.S. Highways 31 and 35 and State Highway 22 cross the county. Elevation is 750-900 feet. Most of the terrain is nearly level, except for slightly sloping near some creeks. And there is some steeply sloping terrain in the west and north central regions. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The landscape features oak, ash, elm, cottonwood and hickory trees. The county pertains to the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain land resource area. Howard county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 16٥/33٥ in January and 63٥/86٥ in July. Annual precipitation is about 38 and snowfall about 25 inches. Typically the first freeze of the season occurs October 10-15. The last freeze varies from May 1-5. The growing season lasts about 158-168 days. Agricultural activity is diversified with corn for grain, soybeans, and livestock. About four-fifths of the land is in farms and about four- fifths of that land is in cash crops. An additional crop is winter wheat. Cucumbers, sweet corn and tomatoes are main vegetables. Apples are a primary fruit. Popcorn is a special crop. Livestock includes cattle/calves and hogs/pigs. Main natural resources include construction sand and gravel, petroleum, and forestland. Water resources include the Kokomo Reservoir No. 1 and nearly a dozen creeks. Communities include the city of Kokomo, and the towns of Greentown and Russiaville. 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Famous sons and daughters of Howard County include Ryan White, who became a world symbol for courage in the face of AIDS. A hemophiliac, he acquired AIDS from a blood transfusion. His life was the subject for a TV movie, The Ryan White Story (1987).
