3 Scientific Notation 3.5 x 10 4 and 7.4 x 10 -5 When a number is in Scientific Notation, it is written as a product of a decimal number and a power of 10. A power is simply a number with an exponent so a power of 10 means 10 raised to an exponent. The exponent can be positive or negative, so we need to understand what it means when an exponent is negative.

10 Zero and Negative Exponents Zero and negative exponents are too easy. DEFINITION OF NEGATIVE EXPONENTS a -n is the reciprocal of a n. where a is not equal to 0.

11 Simplify. A negative exponent is an inverse! Flip the number over to make the exponent positive!
