Country Context Malawi’s pop is about 12M of which 89% is rural Well endowed with renewable sources of energy, though not adequately exploited Low electrification especially in the rural areas (about 1%) Govt aims to improve access to electricity for its rural pop in order to reduce poverty & transform rural economies & improve productivity

3. Project I – Provision of electricity to rural trading centers Overview Improve service delivery for the poor in health, education, agriculture and other social amenities Will connect about 60 trading centers Also to carry out awareness campaigns Duration: 2 years Budget Donor: $6M Co-financing: $0.5M

4. Project II – Artisanal training in production, installation and maintenance of RETs Overview To provide skills in installation and maintenance of RETs (increase number of skilled artisans) To provide refresher courses Duration: 18 months Budget: Donor grant: $2M Co-financing: $0.25M

5. Project III – Provision of energy for the rural poor through RETs Overview: To establish solar villages Will establish 70 solar villages – for water pumping, irrigation, and lighting To promote other alternative energy sources – briquettes, stoves, gel fuel, biogas, wind etc. Duration: 24 months Budget: Donor grant: $3M Co-financing: $0.2M
