1 Hurdles and Detours For a Successful English Language Learner and Mathematics Workshops

2 Objectives –Content Objective—Identify and share strategies to work with groups that may be reluctant to acknowledge that they need to work with ELL students. –Language Objective—Participants will discuss and list the objections workshop trainers may hear when they host workshops focusing on making math accessible to ELL students. Then collaborate to identify ways facilitators can help change the environment to a constructive tone.

3 Features of a good workshop session Quietly think of a workshop you held that went exceptionally well. –How did you know it was going well? –What were some of the features of that workshop? Share your thoughts with your neighbor. Share your thoughts with your table group.

4 Features of a workshop that did not go well Quietly think of a workshop you held that did not go well. –How did you know it was not going well? –What were some of the features of that workshop? –Write two of those features on a note card. Put your card in the middle of the table. Choose another card from the table. –Identify one of the features you agree with. –Share the feature you’ve chosen with your table group.
