6. A look into the future…by the end of class you will be confident in the following statement. When a compound forms, elements chemically combine & something entirely new is created. When a mixture is formed the elements physically combine and nothing new is created.

7. Confused? If you can SEE the different parts that make up a substance, it is a MIXTURE. – Ex: The marshmallows in Lucky Charms look different than the cereal. If you can PHYSICALLY SEPARATE the different parts that make up a substance, it is a MIXTURE. – Ex: You can remove salt from salt water.

8. Remember… A mixture can actually be made up of both elements AND compounds. – Ex: Air Elements: Nitrogen, Oxygen Compounds: Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 )

Class will earn a point every time the WHOLE class has it correct. If the class earns 8 points we get to listen to a song of your choice at the end of class.
