DO NOW! 3 days til THXGIVING! 11/19/2012 DO NOW! 1.Take a piece of paper & some art supplies from the front counter. 2.Draw a picture of what you THINK you want to be when you grow up.

Take 5 minutes to silently write down how science can help you in your future career. Stuck? Look around the room at the science poster questions you answered at the beginning of the year.

So… Is science important to our future?

LEQ 3 Chlorine is a toxic chemical and also a chemical that makes up salt (NaCl), so why isn’t salt deadly??

Alternate reading paragraphs between you and your partner. 1 st to start – individual who has a birthday closest to Thanksgiving ♥ Underline/Highlight to pull out KEY POINTS. Be prepared to answer the following questions full class (cold call time!): 1. What is a mixture? 2. What is a compound? 3. How is a compound different from a mixture? 4. What is an example of a mixture? 5. What is an example of a compound?

A look into the future…by the end of class you will be confident in the following statement. When a compound forms, elements chemically combine & something entirely new is created. When a mixture is formed the elements physically combine and nothing new is created.

Confused? If you can SEE the different parts that make up a substance, it is a MIXTURE. – Ex: The marshmallows in Lucky Charms look different than the cereal. If you can PHYSICALLY SEPARATE the different parts that make up a substance, it is a MIXTURE. – Ex: You can remove salt from salt water.

Remember… A mixture can actually be made up of both elements AND compounds. – Ex: Air Elements: Nitrogen, Oxygen Compounds: Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 )

Boards Up! I will flash a picture on the board. You will write C if you believe it is a COMPOUND. M if you believe it a MIXTURE. You will have 10 seconds to decide and have your boards in the air. Class will earn a point every time the WHOLE class has it correct. If the class earns 8 points we get to listen to a song of your choice at the end of class. There are 10 possible points to be earned – get your game faces on!

Underneath the word write in 1 sentence WHY it is a compound or mixture. 2 points for correct placement (50 pnts. total), 2 points for sentence WHY (50 pnts. Total). Total value: 100 points

DO NOW! Happy Wednesday! 11/28/2012 DO NOW! 1.Classify the following images as ELEMENT, MIXTURE, or COMPOUND & explain WHY :

LEQ 3 – Day 2! Chlorine is a toxic chemical and also a chemical that makes up salt (NaCl), so why isn’t salt deadly??
