2 Course Goal: –Give sophomore level students a broad overview of bioengineering disciplines (biomechanics, biomaterials, medical imaging, biotechnology, tissue engineering). Get students excited and interested in pursuing a career in bioengineering/biomedical engineering. Course Emphasis: –Provide students with a strong fundamental understanding of how engineering tools, techniques and methodologies are used to analyze and understand biological and physiological systems. Instructional Approach: –Extensive use of illustrative examples to clarify concepts –In-class and out-class use of computational tools (i.e. MATLAB) to develop strong problem solving skills –Incorporation of hands-on physiological learning modules to facilitate educational experience. –Students are required to write and present a report on a current research or industrial topic in bioengineering. 3 Biomechanics of tissues Biomechanics of joints Biomechanics of gait Lehigh University Course Title: BioE 120 Biomechanics (3 cr.) Course Title: BioE 121 Biomechanics Laboratory (1 cr.) Study of postural stability Dynamics of jump Kinematics of gait Range of motion Mechanical properties of bone and muscle

4 Design, layout and fabrication of a simple MEMS device with biomedical application (e.g. silicon strain gauge) Electrophysiology experiments (BioPac modules) Analysis of several commercially available Laboratory exercise dedicated to the medical image analysis. Commercially available software will be used to analyze the images obtained from local hospitals. Optical fiber based biosensors (i.e. to measure glucose concentration) Interaction of laser with tissues, proteins and other biomolecules Optical tweezers for measuring viscoelasticity of cytoskeleton fibers in cells Immunofluorescent microscopy Lehigh University Course Title: BioE 210 Bioelectronics/Biophotonics/BioMEMS Laboratory (6cr)

5 Novel and/or effective methods used to teach innovation & entrepreneurship Implement product-driven student project teams in collaboration with local industrial firms and Lehigh’s award-winning Integrated Product development (IPD) program Create synergism by forming partnerships with science, engineering and business departments to establish a comprehensive bio-related concentrations and bio-related minors programs Structured Innovative Thinking (SIT) method will be taught to undergraduates Lehigh University

7 Describe a course project or exercise that exemplifies “best practices” Timely planning of the overall program development that crosses traditional departments and college boundaries Cultivating industrial partnerships to mentor students and provide real-time problems through entrepreneurial projects Introduction of seminar courses for the freshmen and sophomores that exposes them early to different aspects of bioengineering Lehigh University
