3 Nature vs. Nurture: An ongoing Debate The degree to which human behaviour is determined by genetics/biology (nature) or learned through interacting with the environment (nurture) EX: IQ scores Turn and talk

4 Nature Behaviour is caused by innate characteristics : The physiological/biological characteristics we are born with (genes)

5 Nurture An individual’s behaviour is determined by the environment- the things people teach them, the things they observe, and because of the different situations they are in.

6 Debate Topic “Are people more a product of nature or of nurture?”

7 Strengths USEFULNESS: Findings can be very useful to society as a whole

8 Weaknesses It is not always easy to separate out what is nature and what is nurture. Studying something like genetics can be socially sensitive – “eugenics” Studies might need to go to unethical means to figure out whether something is truly “nature” or “nurture”.
