2 Anatomy of the testes: The two testes are egg-shaped organs that hang suspended in a pouch of skin (scrotum) outside the male body

4 Function of the testes: The testes in a man produce testosterone, which affect many of the male characteristics and sperm production.

5 Testosterone: Testosterone is a hormone produced by the body. In the early years of a man's life, it is responsible for the normal growth and development of the sex organs, as well as other male physical features such as body hair and muscle development. Normal levels of testosterone contribute to energy, sexual function, mood, and libido. But sometimes a man may have low levels of testosterone. 7 High values: In men, a high level of testosterone may indicate a tumor in the testicles or adrenal glands. In boys younger than 10, a high level of testosterone may indicate early (precocious) puberty, a tumor in the testicles, or an abnormal adrenal gland. In women, a high level of testosterone may indicate a tumor of the ovaries or adrenal glands. 8 Low values: In men or boys who have gone through puberty, a low level of testosterone may indicate decreased testicular function. It may also indicate improper development of testicular, injury to testicular, or a lack of testicles. A low testosterone level in men can also be caused liver disease (cirrhosis), or treatment for cancer of the prostate gland. Chronic alcohol use can cause a low testosterone level.
