Identify treatment options available It depends on the cause and severity, (how bad) of the disorder People can receive counselling, also called therapy. This can be individual, group for family therapy. Some disorders also need medication and possibly some time in hospital

Think of a trusted adult whom you could talk to about a problem. Write a few sentences describing how that adult could help you.

A person with a problem talks to a mental health professional, like a school counselor or school psychologist. The conversations are confidential and private UNLESS the person is in immediate danger or is talking about hurting someone else. The counselor tries to help the person deal with her problems.

In group therapy, people offer each other tips for coping and dealing with problems. What do you think might be helpful about group therapy? People meet to discuss their problems and help each other. A mental health professional is there to guide the discussion.

Families learn how to help a family member with a mental or emotional disorder. The family is a big support for the person.

Many people with mental and emotional disorders do not seek treatment or help. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed of their illness. They may not think that they need treatment. Other people may not know that there is treatment and help available

Some people just hope the disorder will go away BUT they don’t go away on their own. If left untreated, they can become more severe, worse. PLEASE ask for help as early as possible

Many health care professionals can provide a referral. A referral is a suggestion to seek help or information from another person or place. No-one should suffer from a mental or emotional problem alone. Many people have been treated for their problems and have a normal life.
