Outcome 3.2 SAC (aiming for Friday, 31 st October) Preparation for exam

KEY KNOWLEDGEKEY SKILLS  Different types of games including invasion, net/court, striking, fielding, target and the essential game elements contained within each.  A variety of tactics and strategies used to improve sports performances and their impact on the game  Different approaches to fostering decision making in sports such as game sense, discovery learning, constraints-based coaching and both deliberate play and practice.  Processes responsible for the transfer of skills from practice to competition.  Differentiate between games and sports  Describe tactical or strategic solutions to various sporting scenarios by using correct terms  Participate in and design one strategy that can be used to develop decision making skills  Demonstrate an understanding of approaches used to improve decision making skills  Become familiar with relevant technology used to analyse set plays and game strategies

Classifying team sports and games Invasion games To invade the opponent’s territory to score more points than the opposing team. Net/court games To hit an object into the opponent’s court, so the opponent cannot return it. Target games To achieve the best possible score by placing the projectile closest to the designated target. Striking/fielding games To score more runs than the opponents in the designated time.

Tactics and strategy Strategy: Plans you devise before the competition (what you plan to do) Tactics: Decisions and actions you execute in response to the evolving situations.

Invasion game structure Discussion: Roles of defenders and attackers in team sports.

Focussing on tactics... What tactics did you use yesterday, or do you plan to use next Tuesday? List/describe them

Developing Strategies Move into your groups to plan strategies for: Handball Puck hockey Spend 20 minutes on this before going to the hall.

What the coach should focus on Which approach to coaching is more significant? How much time should be spent on technique work and how much time should be spent on tactical understanding and decision-making before playing the game? Teaching decision-making in sport: Game sense approaches Discovery learning Constraints-based learning Read pages 348 - 352

Game sense approaches The game, rather than technique, is the focus of a training session. To encourage thinking about where, when and how. To encourage players to become more tactically aware, encouraging higher order thinking, thereby equipping players to make better decisions during the game.

Discovery learning Repeatedly performing a specific skill and then modifying performance based on feedback. Learning by doing. Skills and tactics “If-then” rules…if something happens, then this is the appropriate action. Solving problems using the skills you have learnt. Feedback is essential for development.

Constraints-based learning Constraints = the factors that effect learning Individual constraints Body size Fitness Mental skills etc Environmental constraints Physical Social (including cultural) Taking into account all factors that effect learning, and planning training sessions around these.

Pretend you are the coach… Plan an activity that you could be used at training to enhance your athlete’s decision making abilities.

Practical Applications Modifying training to work on specific parts of their players’ game. Eg. modifying the area to force the player to develop their technical skills while practising their problem-solving and decision-making skills. Modified games

Deliberate play and practice Appropriate for younger people (6 – 13 years) Aimed at creating enjoyment and socialisation whilst developing skills and understanding of the game. Modified games with small teams and flexible rules.
