3 Mental Activity We are going to practise addition facts. We are going to add consecutive numbers. Consecutive numbers follow on from each other. What does “consecutive” mean?

4 3 and 4 are consecutive numbers 4 follows on from 3 Can you think of any more consecutive numbers?

5 Which two consecutive numbers give a sum of 7? 3 + 4 = 7

6 Which two consecutive numbers give a sum of 5? 2 + 3 = 5

7 Which two consecutive numbers give a sum of 11? 5 + 6 = 11

8 Which two consecutive numbers give a sum of 13? 6 + 7 = 13

9 Which two consecutive numbers give a sum of 31? 15 + 16 = 31

10 Which two consecutive numbers give a sum of 43? 21 + 22 = 43

11 Main Activity Today we are going to make tangrams. Tangrams are ancient Chinese shape puzzles. They were invented about 4000 years ago!

12 You need to hold the ruler still, then draw the line. We are going to draw a tangram.

13 What shape did we start off with? What shapes do we have now inside the square?

14 Now that we have drawn the tangram, we can cut out the shapes.

15 We can put the shapes together in a different way to make a new shape.

16 Group Work Cut out the shapes in a tangram. Describe the shapes and then put the tangram back together again. Cut out the shapes in a tangram. Describe the shapes and try to make a new shape from them. Draw your own tangrams. Make different shapes.
