1 Gothic Style Art & Architecture. By Tiffany Logan & Jade Wolf

2 Greatest Achievements. The towering stone cathedrals was a great achievement because they severed as symbols of wealth and religious devotion. The crowned achievement of medieval architecture was the Gothic Cathedral. Although the most famous was the Bayeux Tapestry.

3 Architecture. Stone churches were a big reflection of Roman influences. The churches looked like fortresses. – Thick walls and towers. – The roof was a barrel vault, it was a long tunnel of stone that covered the main part of the structure. – Brilliant colors and decorative details. – Stained glass windows.

4 Art. Religious paintings were altar pieces that would symbolize ideas of the church. Paintings in thread were woven tapestries that would display biblical scenes. Monks, Nuns, and Artisans would illuminate many of the biblical books.

5 Why did they start to care about art? A renewed interest grew in art when voyages of discovery began in the 1400’s spurring inspiration for new art. The new era was known as the Renaissance. Paris and Vienna became the centers of high culture as they flowed with beautiful bright colored art.

6 Abbot Suger He wanted to build a new abbey church at St. Denis. His main goal was to honor God and St. Denis through the beautification of his church. His great ambition led to the remodeling of the abbey church of St. Denis.

7 Stained Glass Windows Were paintings that displayed religious scenes of the bible. They were commonly found in churches. It was put together by cutting different pieces of stained colored glass and pasting them together. Many of the windows were in 12 large sections which may have represented the 12 Apostles.

8 How did the style of art and architecture change during the High Middle Ages? Architecture became more detailed. They had very defined pieces of art inside many of the churches. It was seen that more effort had been put into the creation of these buildings.
