92-year-old cancer survivor becomes oldest woman to run a marathon92-year-old cancer survivor becomes oldest woman to run a marathon They all have some sort of disability Remembrance 2015

92-year-old cancer survivor becomes oldest woman to run a marathon92-year-old cancer survivor becomes oldest woman to run a marathon One hundred years ago it was 1915. The First World War had started at the end of June the previous year. During 1915 the war continued on the Western Front, with the Allies fighting the Germans in France and Belgium. The first German Zeppelin raids were launched, bombing civilians in British towns and cities. Germany and Britain blockaded each other’s ports, attacking merchant ships and sinking them. The American passenger ship Lusitania was sunk with the loss of 1201 lives. At the Second Battle of Ypres there was the first use of poisonous gas as a weapon. 6000 Allied troops died in the attack. The Second Battle of Ypres ended with combined casualties of 100, 000 men. The war expanded with the Allied attack at Gallipoli, a disastrous invasion of Turkey. Italy joined the war- 230, 000 Italians died in 1915. At the Battle of Loos the British used poison gas against the Germans. The wind sent some of it back to the British trenches.

92-year-old cancer survivor becomes oldest woman to run a marathon92-year-old cancer survivor becomes oldest woman to run a marathon This famous poem was written in 1915 by a Canadian army doctor. He was serving in Ypres. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

The First World War Casualties Soldiers from all sides 11 million killed Civilians from all sides 7 million killed Soldiers and civilians from all sides wounded 20 million

To discuss… Why do we remember? What does Remembrance mean to us in 2015? Is Remembrance historical or current? How should we remember those people who have died in war?
