Brave New World CHAPTER 7

Sharing Answers With your table group, discuss the study questions assigned to you to complete over break. In answering them, refer to specific page numbers and passages in your copy of the novel. If you did not complete all the questions, now is the time to get ideas from your peers. This time is meant to be collaborative, not copying. Use the time to truly understand your reading and ask questions of your peers.

Denotation & Connotation Denotation refers to what words literally mean. Connotation refers to the deeper, emotional meaning words convey. In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley uses words with strong emotional connotations rather than words that merely denote action. On the worksheet, circle the words with the stronger connotation. In the second column, explain why the word you circled has the stronger connotation. On the back side of the sheet, examine the context of the phrases from Brave New World, and identify them as having a positive (p), a negative (n), or a neutral (x) connotation.

In class writing # 3 In a well thought out 3 paragraph response, discuss the following prompt fully. Be sure to respond to each part of the prompt. In these chapters, John’s struggle to fit into the society on the Reservation becomes the focus, and John supplants Bernard as the protagonist. John is rejected by the Indian culture and is poised to assume the role of an outsider, a Savage, in the World State of civilization. Write a response which describes a personal experience of rejection. Perhaps you have been the victim of discrimination. Perhaps you have discriminated against someone else. Use details to paint a picture in the reader’s mind of this incident or the feelings associated with this rejection. Consider the following possibilities: Racial discrimination Gender bias Sexual discrimination Class discrimination

Brave New World CHAPTER 8

Soma ad Using supplies in our classroom, design a magazine advertisement promoting soma. Your advertisement should include a catchy slogan (preferably a hypnopaedic phrase) and a unique logo for the product. Your finished ad should hype the benefits of soma and be written in the style of the World State.

Brave New World CHAPTER 9

Summarizing and Responding In your classwork, write 2 paragraphs comparing life in the World State with life on the Reservation. Where would you prefer to live? Why?
