1 ROWAN CLASS YEAR 3 Curriculum Letter-Spring 16 Literacy: We will start by looking at fables, with the children creating their own at the end of the unit. Our narrative work will revolve around the lives of adventurers who used transport to help them achieve their aims. We will then look at instructional writing, explanation and our poetry unit will focus on transport poems. Mathematics. We will start with place value and money and then move on to fractions. Children will be taught both mental methods of subtraction and addition and written ones, extending to column methods. We will then include data work with our topic. We will then extend our knowledge of multiplication and division. Please support children at home with telling the time to 5 minutes using both analogue and digital clocks. Science will be covered by Mrs Rawnson and will focus on animals including humans. We will be linking lots of our explorers and adventurers topic work to science. Transport Explorers: We will be studying all aspects of transport, travel and trade with a particular emphasis on people who have broken records and reached their aims through self- belief and determination despite incredible journeys. We will focus on sea and land transport then in Fairtrade fortnight study the history of trade and the meaning of the ‘Fairtrade’. We are planning to create a product to sell and may need some help with our enterprise! We also will explore air and space travel, aiming to follow our own local British astronaut, Major Tim Peake and his exploits aboard the International Space Station. We are lucky to have Beaulieu Motor Museum near and we are planning to visit there after half term to support our work on transport and study the history of speed. ICT: We will be extending our knowledge of Word and PowerPoint and linking it to our topic work. We will also look at Scratch programming. PE: Year 3 will be swimming on Tuesdays until Easter and progress has been superb at all levels. In our Games sessions, if the weather is good, we will introduce some hockey skills. Indoor PE sessions will focus on Real PE skills. Art /DT will mainly be linked to topic. We will finish our watercolour work on Edwin Young which will be exhibited in the gallery at Salisbury Library. We plan to sketch and paint different modes of transport and construct models. We will also paint Tudor-style portraits of some of the Tudor explorers. PHSE: We will start with the Wiltshire Learn4Life unit of ‘Looking Forward’ dealing with achieving goals, the importance of team work and the idea of being Global Citizens. This will include a Fairtrade Enterprise Activity after half term. Home tasks: Homework is set once a week on a Friday to be handed in on Tuesdays. Tables should also be practised., along with Maths Passport targets which are tested on a Friday along with spellings. All children should be aiming to read daily and we are closely monitoring this. RE: The Bridge will be coming into school to explore Christian Expressions of Worship then we will look at ‘What is good about Good Friday?’
