The Mysteries of Mars Carlos, Chloe, Maria, Marisol, Melina and Oscar Utterback Middle School Ms. Copeland 6 th grade 4/19/07

The most interesting result(s) from the Part 1 Activity (the ASU Activity) We found these results interesting because the features are similar to Earths. We found these results by reading, demonstrating, observing, and researching. We used these methods to get that result by shining light through a bucket. (EDITORIAL REMARK: Please explain.)

Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data)

More Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data)

Other Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data)

More Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data)

We found these interesting features that show water might have been on Mars. Lava tubes, volcano eruption, river beds, polar ice caps and canyons used to or might be still existing. We found these results by observing the pictures with the context sheets and the mosaic picture. We think the canyons were formed by water centuries ago.

More Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data) We think it is interesting that Olympus Mons is as large as Arizona. Valles Marineris on Mars is as long as the United States. Both planets have ice formation, water, volcanoes, canyons and craters. They are both near the sun.

Next Steps Would your region of Mars be a good place to land? Why? Why not? The ice caps would be a good place to land because it is flat. The layers would not be a good place to land because there are lots of volcanoes there and it is bumpy. What kind of features would you want to know more about if you could choose a landing site? Why? We would want to know more about canyons because we don’t know if there is water there or not. We need to know about craters so we don’t get stuck in the bottom.

Next Steps Continued… What would your criteria be for selecting a landing site? Why? We would want a safe place with no rocks, how to get there, clear space, flat space with no strong winds. For instance, there are science goals and engineering goals for sending a mission like this to Mars. What would yours be and why? To learn more about how the features were created so we can have a place to live in case something happens to earth. Based on what feature on Mars you would want to study further, what would your landing vehicle be like? It would have spongy tires to bounce. It could turn into a car to move around. It would have a scooter to explore easily.
