3  Young and highly skilled sculptor  Hated women  Creates a sculpture of a women  Possibly because of hatred, possibly because of his personal standards of women Pygmalion

4  Became obsessed with statue  “he labored long and devotedly on the statue”  Even in his hatred of women, he works on the statue constantly  Creates this unnaturally beautiful woman  “No woman ever born, no statue ever made, could approach it”  He falls in love Pygmalion

5  Pygmalion is madly in love with his statue  He treats it as you would any significant other except that his love is not alive  He dresses the statue in robes, brings it gifts and flowers, kisses it, tucks it in bed at night  He eventually gives up The statue

6  Venus was determined to help Pygmalion with his very unique love  Feast day of Venus is especially honored in Cyprus  Pygmalion prays to her that he “might find a maiden like his statue”  Venus sends a sign: blazing altar fire  Pygmalion excitedly returns home Venus

7  Pygmalion returns home and finds statue  He touches the statue and it feels lifelike (warm to the touch)  It “was like watching wax soften in the sun” as the statue slowly came to life  Pygmalion prays to Venus in gratitude  Names the maiden Galatea  Son- Paphos Galatea
