Ecosystems Energy Flow

Energy: Energy enables an object or substance to move, do work, or change. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed from one type to another, or passed from one substance to another.

Where do food chains get energy from? SUN E

What does the plant use the energy for? E GROWTH Flowers Seed/Fruit

When an animal eats a plant, does it get ALL of the sun’s energy? 90% of the energy is used to allow the organism to grow, find food, make heat, move, reproduce etc… Only 10% of the energy is passed on to the next organism that eats it.

*Energy Flow: 1000 Cal of Energy 10% 90% 100 Cal of Energy 90% 10% 10 Cal of Energy Energy to live!

*Energy Pyramid SUNLIGHT

Pyramid of Energy (Including Decomposers)

*Energy Flow As energy moves up the food chain, the amount of available energy to an organism becomes less and less. This is because every living thing must use most of its energy just to stay alive.

What Happens to the Energy? Approximately *90% of the energy is used by the organism to live (e.g. movement, heat, growth, waste, reproduction). Only *10% of the energy is stored and passed on to the next level of the food chain.

We can save energy by the food we choose to eat! It takes A LOT of energy and land to produce meat for people to eat! It takes 7-16 kg of grain to produce 1 kg of meat. One piece of land can produce the following quantities of food: Cherries: 1,000 kg Apples: 4,000 kg Carrots: 6,000 kg Beef: 50 kg

Meat Consumption: Per capita (Kg/Person) World38.9kg Asia (excluding Middle East)29.7 Central America & Caribbean35.5 Europe44.0 North America91.6 South America40.0 Developed Countries57.7 Developing Countries33.8 High Income Countries62.4 Low Income Countries30.6 Middle Income Countries37.7 Who eats the most meat in the world?

What would happen if everyone in the world ate as much beef as people in Canada do? Food Land per kg (m2) Land per person per year (m2) Beef20.98173 Pork8.92592 Eggs3.52395 Milk1.22053 Fruit0.51369 Vegetables0.31314 Potatoes0.2274

Facts: If the grain being fed to animals for slaughter were fed to people, we could feed an additional 2 billion people worldwide. If Americans ate 10% less meat, the grain saved could feed 1 billion people and save them from starvation. http://www.oswego.edu/~schneidr/CHE300/envinv/EnvInv10.html
