1 Next Generation Network Gulshan Rai, Executive Director, ERNET

2 History of Communication Telegraph Telephone Computer Communications X.25 ISDN FR etc. ATM Optical Network

3 Evolution of networks  First generation networks designed based on copper-based transmission medium example, like Ethernet & Token Ring disadvantage: each node has to inspect whether incoming information meant for it fiber is not used

4 Evolution of networks (continue…)  Second generation networks copper replaced by fiber achieved higher bit rate, longer distance and higher reliability higher network throughput due to higher transmission rates still use traditional architectures disadvantage: nodes still have to process information intended for other nodes

5 Evolution of networks (continue…)  Third generation networks exploit unique features of fiber, like huge spectral bandwidth and the low propagation loss employ lightwave techniques carriers in multiple high capacity channels, which can be individually configured very high network throughput termed as all optical networks (AON)

6 Bandwidth Requirements Banking transaction File server B&W images Colour images Fax Freeze-frame video CD audio VCR-quality video Studio-quality video High-definition TV 3D computed tomography Scientific visualization Character- oriented data (max 1 KBPS) Interactive image (max 5 MBPS) Multimedia (max 10 MBPS) Data visualization (> 50 MBPS) Increasing Bandwidth What we need is bandwidth & connections !

7 The Rise of the Empowered Consumer Evolutionary Phases of Experience Provider to User Dynamic User to Provider Dynamic Experience Passive Broadcast TV, Web Access Pick Service Bundles, VoD Participate Interactive Gaming, Collaborative Services Produce Create Playlists, Remix, Blogs, Connect One Service Fits All, Discrete Model Transact E-Wallet Interact Personalization, Socialization Empower Complete Customization

8 Consumer Needs Are Evolving Beyond Connectivity: Requires Integrated Voice / Video / Data with Mobility  Subscriber Personalization: Actively manage the subscribers identity and adjust the service offering/packaging (i.e., different identity in different worlds)  Mass Scalability: Leverage mass-customization principles: Service-bundling; subscriber-grouping and per-group processing  Service Evolution: From transport-based service models (time/distance/volume) to content-based service models IP NGN Infrastructure Physical and Social Context Determines the Application Mix Used Home Office / VPN Internet Access IM / Group Chat IPTV/VoD Online Gaming

9 Web Services Collaboration Applications Storage/Computing Convergence Business Needs Are Evolving Beyond Connectivity: Requires Highly Available, Secure Managed Services Helping Businesses Reduce Cost / Free Resources to Focus on Core Competency  High Availability: Managed networks can help ensure business continuity in the face of everyday interruptions and unexpected disasters  Application Awareness: Allows operators to classify applications, apply application-specific QoS policies while metering / billing for services on a converged network  Service Security: Providing firewalls and intrusion detection systems (and keeping them updated) and using encryption for all sensitive data IP NGN Infrastructure

10 … But This Approach Places Even More Stringent Requirements on the Infrastructure Integrated Virtualization Application Aware Modular Approach Service Control Policy Control and Execution Virtualization Application Aware Modular Approach Service Control Policy Control and Execution Resilient Multilayer Security High Availability Scalable Multilayer Security High Availability Scalable Adaptive Self-Provisioning Self-Optimizing Self-Defending Self-Provisioning Self-Optimizing Self-Defending

11 Transition to IPNGN  Application convergence –Integration of new service over broad band  Service Convergence –Service continuity across  Network convergence –Eliminate layers in Network for CapEx efficiencies
