3. English II Honors EA1: Writing About My Cultural Identity Understand and apply the term conflict to cultural situations. Write a reflective expository essay using an effective organizational structure and techniques. Examine or convey complex ideas, concepts, and information. Develop a topic with well-chosen, relevant, and sufficient evidence appropriate to the audience’s knowledge of the topic. Work through all stages of the writing process. Use varied types of phrases and clauses to convey specific meanings and add interest to writing.

4. Embedded Assessment 1— Writing About My Cultural Identity Topic: Your assignment is to write reflective essay about your cultural identity. A reflective essay is an essay in which the writer examines his or her experiences in life. The writer then writes about those experiences, exploring how s/he has changed, developed or grown from them. Due Date: Friday, 9/11. You will submit your essay to Turnitin.com no later than 12 pm, or it will be counted late. Format: MLA – Typed – Times New Roman, 12 point font – Double spaced – 1 inch margins (do not adjust margins) – Heading with your name, my name, class, date, word count – Header with your name and page number Word Count: 600-750 words Scoring: I will use the scoring rubric. 7. Homework Artistic Prompt: What would a self-portrait say about your perspective on your cultural identity? Create an artistic work that portrays aspects of this identity. Consider techniques and specific images you can use as evidence to depict and/or symbolize potential conflicts that arise when various aspects of your culture collide. Because artwork, like literature, speaks to an audience, keep in mind the message you want your audience to “read” as they view your work. Creative Writing Prompt: Write a poem emulating the style of Pat Mora and exploring your perspective on a key component of your cultural identity. Be sure to: Focus on a specific culturally based conflict, which may be internal, external, or both. Structure the poem to use juxtaposition for effect at least once. Use diction, syntax, and imagery to present your own voice.
