15 UIC ERTMS Conference 2006 Importance of infill functionality for the performance behavior and safety ÖBB Infrastruktur Betrieb AG - Netztechnik August Zierl - 05.04.2006 Study RWTH Aachen University Influence of automatic train control components with an infill functionality on capacity commissioned by UIC The study examines the effects of automatic train control components with infill functionality on a lines capacity. Forming the basis for studies is a harmonised blocking time model of the type prescribed in UIC Leaflet 406. The ETCS L1 system operating with one or two optimally positioned infill balises is almost as efficient as a system with continuous information transmission. short infill loops in addition to infill balises are virtually equal with total infill in their effect on capacity.

18 UIC ERTMS Conference 2006 Importance of infill functionality for the performance behavior and safety ÖBB Infrastruktur Betrieb AG - Netztechnik August Zierl - 05.04.2006 Practical experience of the Vienna – Budapest project ETCS L1 with intelligent infill configuration offers reasonable capacity complex switch- and signal configuration in stations requires interfaces from the interlocking to the LEU (unambiguous route information is necessary) The (actual) braking model leads to a very low approaching speed to signals (10 – 3 km/h for the last 150m)  Improvement by the specs is necessary Cab signalling offers a differential speed profile depending on the relevant switches of a route set.
