Assignments of Jeanette Vanderlip

My name is Jeanette. I was born and raised here in Arizona. I graduated from Mesa High School, and married my high school sweet heart. We are still married after 17 years, and we have a daughter who is a sophomore at Skyline High School. She turns 16 this December. I have been working in the medical field for the past 16 1/2 years as a medical assistant, and going back to school for my RN. My favorite place to vacation is Mexico, so the picture I am posting is from there. My husband and I are taking our daughter on our first cruise to Mexico in May. We all can't wait.

Story My mother got pregnant at the age of 16, and back then that was something you just didn't do. My grandparents were going to make her have an abortion, so instead she ran away and married my father. She ended up having 4 children with him, and a divorce, and never saw him again. Growing up with my mom, wasn't always a great. I know she did her best. As we became teens, she always preached to us not to have sex. Never the whys, just the do as I say. My brother did have a son his senior year of high school, and luckily everything turned out okay. I did get pregnant my 9th grade year, and miscarried. Looking back, I am great full. My life wouldn't be what it is today. I am still with the same guy, we did get married and have a child today. We have been married 17 years, but if we have that child in 9th grade we probably wouldn't have the life together that we have made. I think parents have to be there for their children, help them, try to teach them before mistakes are made. I know that my mom yelling at us all the time just wanted us to get away from her, we were not listening to her at all.

Let’s Party! This article that I found is a little frightening. First of all teens are having babies at a young age, but then they are partying on top of that. This article is about teen parents came home one night drunk and high from a party and thought it was funny to duct tape their toddler son to the way, along with his sipping cup - where he couldn't reach it. They thought it was so funny they took pictures, and showed them off at a later time. Luckily, someone turned them in and they are both serving time. This just shows that teens are not ready for being parents or partying at this age. They are still kids themselves. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978580696 http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978580696

Analysis The cartoon I found shows that teens are not taught correctly and safe sex. I also feel that a lot of parents don't want to talk to their children so they leave it up to the schools to talk and teach their child. The teens today are not getting the full message. They are being told not to have sex, but not being told if they do have sex how to protect themselves properly. I feel the cartoon I found shows this exactly. http://editorialcartoonists.com/cartoon/display.cfm/81636/

continued In the graph I found it shows the rate of teenage births between countries, United States is the highest and the lowest is Luxembourg. United States is ranked number 1 in the highest number of teen births, at 494,357 births. Looking at this chart it is a little scary to see that number 2 is at 30,413 births. That is a huge difference. The United States is way out of control with teen pregnancy. We really need to try and get this under control, because it will just continue to get worse. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_tee_pre-health-teenage- pregnancy http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_tee_pre-health-teenage- pregnancy
