1 Stylistic Elements How authors create meaning through stylistic elements and figurative language

2 Stylistic Element Technique used by an author to express meaning, ideas, or feelings in a written work (e.g., metaphor, simile, alliteration, etc.). The use of these techniques is related to the tone of the piece and the style of the author.

3 Style The way something is written, in contrast to its content.
Example The way a poem is written can make you think one way but the words you read make you thing another.

4 Refrain A group of words repeated at key intervals in poetry Example
Most songs have a refrain that repeats itself throughout the song, after the chorus.

5 Refrain - Example The cat so silent
Lay curled up on the rug
The fire a blaze
The room so snug. Purring, purring
Quiet and still
Purring, purring
Content from his fill. Tatters the cat
Big, fat cat. No more cold for the day
He was in for the night
Fun he had had
When the day was light. He had just eaten
A dinner of fish
What a treat to have
Filling up his dish.

6 So… lets think about this
Can you identify different style elements ? Why are some poems short and some are long? Why do authors use style elements?

7 Before you go… Take an index card
Write 3 examples of different style elements and explain what that element can help with. Place in the correct spot as you are leaving.
