CONFLICT

WHAT IS CONFLICT? A clash between opposing forces, usually forcing the main character into a dilemma.

The conflict is a problem in a story that a character has to solve. Lots of stories have more than one conflict, but there’s usually one BIG conflict. The BIG conflict is what we usually mean when we talk about conflict.

WHERE IS THE CONFLICT The conflict starts in the Rising Action of a story. The rising action is the beginning of the conflict. The Climax is the part of the story where the conflict is resolved. The Falling Action is what happens because the conflict was resolved. The Resolution is about what happens to everyone with the conflict gone.

TYPES OF CONFLICT

MAN VS. MAN Best described as a conflict between two or more characters of the same kind

MAN VS. SELF Best described as a character in the story having a problem with him or herself.

MAN VS. NATURE Best described as a conflict that places a character against forces of nature

MAN VS. SOCIETY Best described as the conflict in which a character thinks differently from society or has different concepts than what most people think.
