Bellwork Oct. 28 – Nov. 1 State whether each word or phrase represents an amount that is increasing, decreasing, or constant. 1. stays the same 2. rises 3. drops 4. slows down

Writing and Graphing Linear Equations Section 1 - Graphing Relationships Section 3 - Graphing Functions Section 2 - Scatter Plots and Lines of Best Fit Section 4 - Writing Functions

We use graphs to show a relationship between two sets of data. First, we need to translate the picture into math words. Let’s look at an example and translate.

The air temperature was constant for several hours at the beginning of the day and rose steadily for several hours. It stayed the same temperature for most of the day before dropping sharply at sundown. Choose the best graph below to represent this situation: Graph A Graph B Graph C Step 1: Read the graph from left to right to show time passing. Step 2: List key words in order. Temperature Time Step 3: Pick the graph that shows the math words in order. Ex #1

The air temperature was constant for several hours at the beginning of the day and rose steadily for several hours. It stayed the same temperature for most of the day before dropping sharply at sundown. Choose the best graph below to represent this situation: Step 2: List key words in order and decide which graph shows them. Key WordsMath Words Constant Horizontal line Rose steadily Slanting upward line Stayed the same Horizontal line Dropped sharply Slanting downward line

Step 3: Pick the graph that shows the math words in order: Horizontal line, slanting upward line, horizontal line, slanting downward line The correct graph is B.

Each day several leaves fall from a tree. One day a gust of wind blows off many leaves. Eventually, there are no more leaves on the tree. Choose the graph that best represents the situation. Step 1: Read the graph from left to right to show time passing. Step 2: List key words in order and decide which graph shows them. Ex #2 Step 3: Pick the graph that shows the math words in order.

You try: Sketch a graph for the following situation. A truck driver enters a street, drives at a constant speed, stops at a light, and then continues. As time passes during the trip (moving left to right along the x-axis) the truck's speed (y-axis) does the following: x - axis y - axis

As time passes during the trip (moving left to right along the x-axis) the truck's speed (y- axis) does the following:  initially increases  remains constant  decreases to a stop  increases  remains constant Speed Time y x

You try: Sketch a graph for the following situation. The level of water in a bucket stays constant. A steady rain raises the level. The rain slows down. Someone dumps the bucket.

Sometimes a graph can look like this: This is called a discrete graph. How is it different than a continuous line graph? A pet store is selling puppies for $50 each. It has 8 puppies to sell.

Some graphs are connected lines or curves called continuous graphs. Some graphs are only distinct points. They are called discrete graphs.

You try: Sketch a graph for the situation. Tell whether the graph is continuous or discrete. A small bookstore sold between 5 and 8 books each day for 7 days. The graph is discrete.
