 I can compare and contrast 3 types of scientific investigations.  8.2A & B Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student uses scientific inquiry methods during laboratory and field investigations. The student is expected to: (A) plan and implement comparative and descriptive investigations by making observations, asking well-defined questions, and using appropriate equipment and technology; (B) design and implement comparative and experimental investigations by making observations, asking well-defined questions, formulating testable hypotheses, and using appropriate equipment and technology.

1. Have a well-defined question 2. Form a hypothesis 3. Give a list of materials 4. Write steps to procedure 1. What is measured 2. How it is measured 3. How many trials will be repeated 5. Observe and collect data 6. Analyze and explain data 7. Form a valid conclusion

SpongeBob loves to garden and wants to grow lots of pink flowers for his pal Sandy. He bought a special Flower Power fertilizer to see if will help plants produce more flowers. He plants two plants of the same size in separate containers with the same amount of potting soil. He places both plants in a sunny window, and he waters one with fertilized water every day and the other with plain water every day.

1. Have a well-defined question 2. Observe and collect data 3. Analyze and explain data 4. Form a valid conclusion

SpongeBob wants to know which plant grows best in his garden. He measures the growth of two different types of plants over the course of two weeks. Every day, he measures and documents the height of the two plants.

1. Have a well-defined question 2. Observe and collect data 3. Analyze and explain data 4. Form a valid conclusion Sound familiar?

SpongeBob goes to Lowe’s to plan for Sandy’s new garden. As he walks through the Gardening section, he makes notes in his journal about the colors and sizes of the various plants. Using this information, he and Sandy will decide what to plant in her garden.
