3 The Author Virginia Woolf (1882.1.25-1941.3.28)
English writer and one of the foremost modernists of the 20th century Frail health, with metal disturbance. Suffered from several nervous break-downs in 1941 and in fear of losing her sanity she committed suicide. Most famous works : Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929)

4 Plot of A Haunted House Ⅰ:A Mysterious start - a ghostly couple wander through the narrators house. Ⅱ:The narrator tells us the ghostly couple are looking for something in the house, which might be lost in the garden, the loft…… Ⅲ:The narrator tells us a few details of the ghost’s past. Ⅳ:The narrator realizes that what the man could not find on his journey, and what the ghost couple still seek, is the joy of a loving relationship.

5 Plot of A Haunted House Ⅴ:The ghostly couple come on the narrator and her husband asleep in their bed. The ghosts seem to realize that the living couple may feel the kind of love that they themselves once shared. What the ghostly couple search for is the light in the heart——Joy and Love.

7 Analysis The repetition of “it” and “here”: Here we left it.
It’s upstairs. They are looking for it. Perhaps it’s upstairs then. Here we slept. “Here,” she murmurs. Here we left our treasure.

8 Analysis The pulse of the house:
“Safe, safe, safe” the pulse of the house beat softly. “The treasure buried; the room…”the pulse stopped short. “Safe, safe, safe,” the pulse of the house beat gladly. “The treasure yours.” “Safe, safe, safe,” the heart of the house beats proudly. “Long years—”he sighs. “Again you found me.”
