Essay Workshop Instructions If you do not have your completed rough draft today, please sit away from everyone else and complete your rough draft. On your essay, write what kind of feedback you are looking for. Are you struggling with any aspect? For this workshop, we will be rotating one essay clockwise around the circle during each round. Each round is 10 minutes of work time. Please take this workshop seriously and provide the best feedback you can. If you discover any typos or mistakes during this workshop, please correct as needed.

Hand over your essay to the person next to you in a clockwise circle.

ROUND ONE: Claim, Evidence, and Commentary 1. Read the essay and correct any typos as needed. 2. Underline each claim in the topic sentence of the body paragraph. 3. Check to make sure each quote is properly embedded and circle the in-text parenthetical citation. “Quote” (line #). After the first “line,” just the line number will suffice. If there is no introduction to the quote, mark it with “QV” for “quote vomit.” …Orwell. “ Language is degraded” (Orwell 3). Orwell argues, “language is degraded” (Orwell 3). The red shows the QV.

Hand over your essay to the person next to you in a clockwise circle.

ROUND TWO: Organization & Conclusion 1. Read the entire essay and correct any typos as needed. 2. Label the main idea in each paragraph. Do the ideas transition well from point to point? Does each main idea support the overall thesis? 3. Underline the “So what?” in the conclusion. (How does it apply to the greater world?) 4. Provide the requested feedback at the top of the paper.

Hand over your essay to the person next to you in a clockwise circle.

ROUND THREE: MECHANICS LAST ROUND! 1. Read the essay carefully. 2. Edit the essay for capitalization, spelling, punctuation, word choice, and typos. 3. Make sure the essay is in MLA format. Remember you lose a point for every grammatical mistake and only have the opportunity to earn half a point back with corrections.

Read over your feedback and ask questions as needed.

HOMEWORK Final draft is due on Friday. Final draft is due on Friday. If you do not have your final on Friday, you lose ten points. That is a letter grade per day on this 100 point essay. Unless you have an extra day pass of course. I hear some students may be selling those on the Hawk market. ;)
